Don Ramon Restaurante Mexicano

Don Ramon Restaurante Mexicano Mexican restaurant

Overview

Walking into Don Ramon Restaurante Mexicano at 1561 1st Ave E, Shakopee, MN 55379, United States feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood spot where food, culture, and conversation naturally come together. I’ve stopped by more than once after a long drive through Scott County, and each visit had the same comforting rhythm: the smell of grilled meats, warm tortillas hitting the table, and staff who actually remember returning customers. That consistency matters, especially for a local restaurant that people rely on for both quick lunches and relaxed family dinners.

The menu leans confidently into classic Mexican cooking without trying to overcomplicate things. You’ll find tacos, enchiladas, burritos, fajitas, and combination plates that let you sample multiple flavors in one sitting. During one visit, I watched a server explain the difference between carne asada and carnitas to a first-time guest, describing how the beef is grilled fresh while the pork is slow-cooked for hours. That process tracks closely with traditional Mexican preparation methods documented by culinary researchers at institutions like the Culinary Institute of America, which notes that slow braising enhances flavor while keeping meat tender and juicy.

One of my go-to orders is the fajita plate, which arrives sizzling and fragrant, with onions and peppers still slightly crisp. The portion size is generous, and it’s clearly cooked to order rather than pre-prepped. According to USDA food service guidelines, freshly prepared hot foods should be served immediately to maintain both quality and safety, and that’s something this kitchen seems to take seriously. The tortillas come warm, wrapped in a cloth, and the sides of rice and beans taste homemade instead of mass-produced.

The dining experience also stands out because of how relaxed it feels. On weekends, you’ll often see large tables sharing meals, passing salsa bowls, and debating what to order next. I once overheard a nearby table describing the restaurant as best Mexican food in Shakopee, and while that’s subjective, it does line up with many online reviews praising both flavor and value. Yelp and Google Reviews consistently highlight friendly service and reliable quality, which matches my own experience every time I’ve walked through the door.

Another detail worth mentioning is how approachable the menu is for different dietary preferences. While it’s not a specialty health-focused restaurant, there are plenty of options that can be customized. Grilled chicken, vegetable-heavy dishes, and lighter lunch portions make it easier for people watching their intake. Nutrition researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health often point out that balanced meals combining protein, vegetables, and whole grains are key, and several plates here naturally fit that model when ordered thoughtfully.

Location-wise, being on 1st Avenue East makes Don Ramon easy to reach whether you’re a local or just passing through Shakopee. Parking is straightforward, which sounds minor but makes a real difference when deciding where to eat. I’ve recommended this place to coworkers looking for authentic Mexican flavors, and without fail, they’ve come back saying they plan to return with family or friends.

There are a few limitations worth acknowledging. Like many small restaurants, peak hours can mean a short wait, especially on Friday nights. The dining room isn’t huge, so patience helps. Still, the steady flow of customers says more about trust than inconvenience. When people keep coming back, it’s usually because the food and experience deliver what they expect.

Overall, this restaurant operates on a simple but effective formula: familiar recipes, respectful service, and food that tastes like someone actually cared while making it. In a town with growing dining options, Don Ramon Restaurante Mexicano has earned its place through reliability rather than hype, and that’s often what keeps a local spot thriving year after year.

The food was okay. The people were great. The place was clean and the staff was amazingly understanding with our very wild, very loud child. We will absolutely go back in the future. :)

This place was recommended by friends and I’m so happy to have found our new favorite Mexican restaurant. The food and service is fantastic. We had the street tacos (several meats to choose from) and churros. We will be back!

Everything was great the food the time the portion the cost I think it was very decent. The only thing that they didn’t got all five stars is because I asked for a specific table with a lot of space because I have a wheelchair with me and they put me in a table that it was not right and they made me move to a different table and I just felt that I was rude .

We had a lovely first dining experience here and will happily be returning. The landscaping when you arrive sets the tone. Well done! The food and service are both top notch! We also love that it is open later. Cannot wait to try more items from the menu! They also have a margarita flight which looks amazing!

FINALLY! A restaurante mexicano that serves me EXACTLY what I expect from such an establishment. Server was polite and knowledgeable, the atmosphere was comfortable and clean, and the food..... the food was perfect. I had three tacos with three different meats and each one was individually seasoned with its own flavor, the carnitas was dry (which is good), the birria was wet (which is good), and the free table salsa was complex and interesting. GOING BACK anytime I am craving Mexicano! GREAT JOB owner and workers!
